Custom Wood Christmas Gifts: How Early You Need to Order

Custom wood Christmas gifts take time to design, cut, check, and pack before they ship. So your order needs to be in well before the deadline you have in mind. For anything that needs a real conversation about size, wording, or a design we have not cut before, start in early November. For an existing design with a name or date added, you have more room, but less than you think. December fills up fast in a small shop, and the carriers slow down at exactly the same time. Send us your need-by date and we will tell you straight whether it fits.

Key Takeaways

  • Custom work needs lead time for design and cutting, not just shipping.
  • Start in early November for anything that needs a design conversation.
  • Almost any of our designs can carry a name, date, or your own wording.
  • Orders ship with a thank-you card, no receipt, and no item description on the label.
  • Peak-season shipping rates begin in early October. Check carrier send-by dates in the fall.

When do you need to order a custom wood gift for Christmas?

Most of the people who write to me in December are shopping for the same kind of person. The one who already owns everything. Or the one whose house looks great except for one wall nobody has solved. A gift card feels like giving up. So they go looking for something made for that person, find it, and ask the question that actually matters: can you have it here by the 24th.

Sometimes yes. Often no. And I would rather tell you that in October than in December.

Here is what people misjudge. A custom order has three clocks running, not one. There is the design, which means settling the wording or the size and getting a file that will hold together in wood. There is the build: the laser, the check, the finish, the packing. Only then does the shipping clock start. And shipping is the one most people count.

How I would plan it, if I were shopping for myself. If your gift needs a real conversation, a new design, or a piece scaled up for a big wall, start it in early November. If it is one of our existing designs with a name, a date, or a verse added, you have into December. Though how far into December depends on how many orders are already in front of yours. Either way, treat Thanksgiving as the honest deadline and the first half of December as your buffer, not your window.

The shipping side backs this up. The Postal Service has filed for temporary peak-season prices running from early October into January. That is the network telling you when the crush starts, and it is earlier than most people assume. Carriers post their recommended send-by dates in the fall. Check those before you count backward from the 25th.

What can you actually have customized?

More than our website makes obvious, which is partly our fault.

Names and dates are the easy ones. Most of our wall pieces can carry a name, a date, or your own wording, cut into the wood rather than printed on top of it. On some pieces the etching is a separate add-on you buy alongside the piece, so put it in the cart rather than trusting us to catch a request buried in an order note. The scripture pieces work this way too, with your verse and your family's names. The Joshua 24:15 design has been doing this for years.

Size is the other big one. If you have a wall, a stairwell, a sanctuary, or a lobby that our standard sizes do not fit, we can scale a design up. Our custom projects listing covers that kind of work, and the gallery shows what people have actually asked for. One customer had us cut a pair of compass roses in half so she could mount them to a buffet and paint them a color of her own choosing. That is not a request I would have thought of. It was clever.

State shape cutouts are their own category. One state, or two for a couple who started in different places, in small, medium, or large. The sizes are approximate, because the shape of the state decides how it fills the box. And here is the part almost nobody knows: the semi-gloss finish on maple and cherry takes a Sharpie without bleeding. A large cutout makes a wedding or anniversary guest book that ends up on a wall instead of in a closet.

Christmas ornaments are the ones most people do not know we make. They are 4 by 5 inches, a quarter inch thick, cut from maple or cherry, finished in semi-gloss and ready to hang out of the box. Seven designs: star, wave, nativity scene, shepherd and sheep, angel, candle, and babe in stable. Name etched, year, or both. You can mix designs inside one order, which matters when you are doing one per grandchild and they are not all going to want the angel.

What we cannot do is ask wood to behave like paper. Very fine lettering at small sizes gets fragile, and a design with long thin connectors will snap the first time someone handles it. If your idea is in that territory, tell us anyway. There is usually a way to redraw it so it holds.

How does a custom order work in our shop?

It starts with a message, not a checkout. The custom projects listing works as a down payment and you are welcome to buy it, but I would rather you write to us first so we can talk about what you actually want. Half the time the conversation changes the piece for the better.

From there it goes like this. I draw the cut file. You look at it and tell me what is wrong. There is almost always something, usually the spacing of a name. I cut it on one of our lasers here at Skyline Workshop in Hartley, Iowa. I check it. If it is not right I cut it again. Then I pack it and it goes out.

One thing worth knowing before you open the box. A laser cuts by burning, so there is a fine dark edge along every cut line. That is char, and it is normal in laser-cut wood. We pack pieces face down so the front is protected, which means the first thing you see when you lift the lid is the back, and the back is where the scorching shows. More than one person has had a small moment of panic over this. Turn it over.

If it is a gift, the packing matters as much as the piece. Orders go out with no receipt and a shipping label that does not say what is inside, so they can go straight to the recipient. There is almost always a small free gift in there too. Which is less a policy than a habit I have never wanted to break.

What should you have ready before you message us?

You do not need all of this to start a conversation. But it speeds things up, and in November speed is the whole game.

  • The wording written out exactly as you want it to read, line breaks and all. Including the spelling of names you think are obvious. Cut wood has no undo.
  • The wall measurement, or at least the width you have to work with.
  • A wood preference. Maple is light and clean, cherry is warmer, and our ebony-colored wood reads dark and graphic. We went through all three in an earlier post if you want the longer version.
  • The address it is going to. And whether that is the recipient's address rather than yours.
  • Your real need-by date. Not "Christmas." The day you need it in hand.

Which custom gift suits which person?

The orders I see fall into a few shapes. Grandparents get ornaments, one per grandchild, name and year on each. People start that one Christmas without meaning to begin anything. And by year five the tree tells you exactly how the family grew.

Couples in a new place get two state shapes, or their names and the year for the entryway, which is the same ground our housewarming guide covers, and most of it carries over.

Then there are the ones for someone having a hard year. Usually a verse piece with their name on it, chosen because it means something to them rather than because it suits the room. I take more care with those than with anything else that crosses the bench.

And for the person nobody can buy for. The answer is rarely a better product. It is the thing they would never buy themselves, which is almost always something with their own name on it.

If you want to browse first, the Custom Art collection is where the customizable pieces live, and the Christmas Gifts collection is what we pull together for the season. All of it is cut here in northwest Iowa, from real wood, by a family that has been at this since 2013, back when the whole operation was a homemade laser cutter in a basement. Long enough on Etsy to be a Star Seller at a 4.9 average across roughly two thousand reviews, and the thing those reviews mention most is not the design. It is that a person answered.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far ahead should I order a custom wood Christmas gift?

Early November if the piece needs design work, a size change, or back and forth about wording. Into December if it is an existing design with a name or date added, though that depends on how full the queue is when you order. Send us your need-by date and you will get a straight answer rather than a hopeful one.

Can you ship the gift straight to the person receiving it?

Yes, and it is set up for that. The package includes a thank-you card and no receipt, and the shipping label does not describe what is inside. Send us the note you want them to read along with your order and we will print it and put it in the box.

Can you put a name on a design that is not listed as customizable?

Usually. Most of our designs can take added text. The limit is physical rather than technical: very small lettering and very thin connecting pieces get fragile in wood. Ask about the specific design and we will tell you whether it will hold up.

Which wood should I choose?

Maple for a bright room, cherry when you want warmth, ebony when you want the shape to read strongly against the wall. If you are stuck, tell us the wall color and we will pick.

What happens if something arrives wrong?

Write to us. Returns are accepted within 30 days, and on custom work I would rather fix it than argue about it. If I cut it wrong, I cut it again.

If you already have something in mind, the sooner you say it out loud to us, the better the odds it is under the tree. Start with the Custom Art collection, or tell us what you are picturing and we will go from there. Orders over $60 ship free.
