Christian Christmas Gifts: A Verse for Every Person on Your List

The best Christian Christmas gift is a verse chosen for the person, not for the season. Start with the year they actually had. A couple married in spring gets one verse. Someone spending the first Christmas without a parent gets another. A pastor who gives all year and gets nothing back gets a third. Each of them has a verse that fits, and a scripture piece cut from real wood stays on the wall long after the tree comes down. When in doubt, pick the verse they already love over the one you think they need. If you want names, a date, or a different verse added, plan on early November. Personalized work needs a conversation before anything goes on the laser.

Key Takeaways

  • Choose the verse for the person's year, not the room it hangs in.
  • A verse they already hold onto beats one you think they should hear.
  • The Joshua 24:15 piece takes two names and a wedding date in place of the verse reference. Up to 35 characters.
  • Cut letters read as lettering in wood from across a room. A printed sign reads as a picture of lettering.
  • Anything personalized needs lead time. Start in early November, not December.

Why give scripture instead of something seasonal?

Most Christmas gifts have a short life. A candle burns down in three weeks. A sweater goes back in the closet. A holiday sign goes into a garage tote the first weekend of January and stays there until next December. A verse on the wall doesn't get packed away. It is still up in July.

That is also why a scripture gift is harder to get right than it looks. The aisles are full of them. Mostly printed boards made to match a farmhouse look, and they read like decor. Nobody looks at one years later and thinks about who gave it to them.

The difference isn't the wood, although I'll get to the wood. It's the reason. A verse picked because of what someone went through this year says something a store-bought sign can't. I would rather send out one piece like that than ten that are just nice.

How do you choose the right verse for someone?

A few questions will do most of the work. The last one is the one people usually skip.

  • What kind of year did they have? A move, a wedding, a baby, a diagnosis, a funeral, the year usually picks the verse for you.
  • Is there a verse they already hold onto? The one written in the front of their Bible. Read at their wedding. Quoted when things get hard. If you don't know, ask their spouse or their kids. That one question is worth more than anything I can tell you.
  • Where will it hang? A long, narrow piece fits over a doorway or a headboard. A big one wants its own wall in an entry or a living room.

Then check the translation. People read the words on their wall every day, and a line that is slightly off from the Bible they grew up with will bother them every time. The wording on our standard scripture pieces matches the King James Version. If you're ordering a different verse or your own wording, send it to us exactly as it reads in their Bible, word for word, and we'll cut it that way.

Which verse fits which person on your list?

A family in a new home, or a couple married this year

"As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" is from Joshua 24:15. It is our most popular scripture piece and also our biggest, about 30 by 20 inches, which suits an entryway or the wall above the family photos.

The customizable Joshua 24:15 piece is the one to give a couple. In place of the verse reference along the bottom, we cut their first names and wedding date, or the names of everyone in the family. The limit is 35 characters. Two first names and a full date fit with room to spare. A family of six with full names does not, so I message you to work out the arrangement before anything goes on the laser.

Someone facing their first Christmas after a loss

The first Christmas after a death can be one of the hardest days of the year for a family. A gift then has one job: to say you remember, without asking anything back.

Be Still and Know That I Am God, from Psalm 46:10, and The Lord Is My Shepherd, from Psalm 23, are the two I would reach for. Both are long and narrow, about 30 by 9 inches, so they fit over a doorway or a bed without taking over a room. Psalm 23 is read at a lot of funerals. Some families want it on the wall because of that. Others can't bear to see it every day. If you aren't sure, go with Psalm 46. It's gentler and it works for almost anyone.

If they're not sure they want a verse on the wall, send this one instead. Grief, the Price of Love carries a short poem. It's about 21 by 15 inches, in maple or cherry, with the nail holes already cut into it.

We can ship any of these straight to them, with your note printed and tucked inside, a thank-you card, and no receipt. Keep the note short. You aren't trying to fix anything.

Someone at the end of a long, uncertain year

Some years don't resolve by December. A job ended in September. A move happened that nobody chose. Test results are still coming in one at a time, and nobody is ready for the last one. Trust in the LORD, from Proverbs 3:5, is for that year. It runs about 30 by 14 inches, a middle size that works over a desk or a kitchen table, which tends to be where people do their worrying.

Someone baptized or new to faith this year

I Am the Way, the Truth and the Life, from John 14:6, says the whole thing in one line, which suits someone just starting out. It's about 30 by 10 inches. If they'd rather have the verse almost everyone knows by heart, John 3:16 is a taller piece, about 30 by 16.5 inches.

A pastor, or the church itself

Congregations often go in together on a Christmas gift for their pastor. A verse makes a good one, and a better one if it's the verse your pastor comes back to most from the pulpit. The church office or a longtime member can usually tell you which one that is.

If that verse isn't one of our standard designs, our custom projects listing is where it starts. We can cut a different verse, or scale a design up to fill a fellowship hall or a sanctuary wall. That kind of piece needs a conversation first, so write to us before you buy anything.

Grandchildren

Not every faith gift has to be wall-sized. Our customizable Christmas ornaments come in seven designs, and five of them tell the story in Luke 2: the nativity scene, the shepherd and sheep, the angel, the babe in the stable, and the star. Each is about 4 by 5 inches, maple or cherry, with a name, a year, or both etched in, and you can mix designs inside one order. Give one a year, and by the time they're grown each grandchild has a small box of them to carry to their own tree.

How is a wood scripture piece different from a printed sign?

On a printed sign, the words are ink on a board. On ours, the words are the board. Every letter is cut out on the laser and the piece hangs as one connected shape, so the wall shows through the gaps and each letter throws a little shadow. From across the room it reads as lettering in wood, not a picture of lettering.

I'd rather be plain about the material, so here it is. Our maple and cherry pieces have authentic wood veneers with real grain under a clear semi-gloss finish. The ebony is a black-colored wood with a fine visible grain and a satin finish. Everything is a quarter inch thick and light enough to hang on two to four small nails, which come in the box. Set the nails in the wall and rest the piece on them. Don't nail through the wood.

Because the letters are cut out, the thinnest parts of any design are the bits that hold the letters together. Lift a piece by its outer edge, never by a letter, and take your time getting it onto the nails.

The laser burns as it cuts, which leaves a thin dark edge along every line. That's normal. We pack pieces face down to protect the front, so the first thing you see when you open the box is the back, where the scorching shows. Turn it over before you worry.

For the wood itself: maple is light and quiet, cherry is warmer, and ebony gives the strongest contrast on a pale wall but disappears on a dark one. I went through all three in more detail in our post on maple, cherry, and ebony wood, and if you're still deciding on size or placement, our guide to choosing wood wall art covers it.

When should you order a scripture gift for Christmas?

A standard piece with no changes is the easy one. We ship every day, and it goes out as soon as it's cut, checked, and packed.

Anything with names, a date, or a different verse needs a message or two before I cut it, and in December those messages take longer because everyone is sending them at once. Order personalized pieces by early November and treat Thanksgiving as your real deadline. Our post on how early to order custom wood Christmas gifts walks through the whole timeline.

Every scripture piece we sell at Skyline Workshop is designed, cut, checked, and packed in our shop in Hartley, Iowa. It started in 2013, when the first laser cutter was built by hand in a Chicago-area basement. On Etsy we're a Star Seller with a 4.9 average across nearly two thousand reviews, and the small extra gift we tuck into almost every box comes up in review after review. That habit isn't going anywhere. You'll find all of our verses in the Scripture Wall Art collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good Christian Christmas gift for someone who has everything?

Something with their own verse on it, or their own name. People who have everything still don't have the line they hold onto cut in wood and hung where they'll see it. If you know the verse, send it to us. If you don't, ask someone in their family.

Can you cut a different verse or add our family name?

Yes. The Joshua 24:15 piece takes names and a date up to 35 characters. For a different verse, a longer passage, or a bigger size, start with a message through our contact page so we can talk through the wording and layout before you order.

Which Bible translation do your scripture pieces use?

The wording on our standard pieces matches the King James Version. For custom verses, send us the exact text from the translation the person reads, and we cut it as you send it.

Is a scripture gift appropriate for someone who is grieving?

It can be, as long as the verse fits their faith rather than yours. Psalm 46:10 is gentle and works for most people. If you're unsure where they stand, the Grief, the Price of Love piece offers the same comfort without scripture.

How big are your scripture pieces, and how do they hang?

Our standard verses are about 30 inches wide and run from 9 to 20 inches tall, all a quarter inch thick. Each one ships with small nails and hanging instructions, and hangs on two to four nails set in the wall.

If you know who's on your list but not which verse, write to us with a sentence about them and the year they had. I'll tell you which piece I would send. It's what I do all day. Or browse the Scripture Wall Art collection and the rest of our Christmas gifts. Orders over $60 ship free, and if you want first word on new designs, the mailing list sign-up is at the bottom of this page.
